February 18, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Post adoption Parenting workshop
Adoption Through the Eyes of Children: What your children may be thinking about but find it difficult to communicate!
Presented by Debbie Riley, MS

Participants learn what children understand about adoption at different developmental stages, and what to share with their children at different ages, including information that parents perceive to be difficult, negative, or painful. Practical advice is offered to help parents anticipate their children's questions and concerns, and learn effective, appropriate ways of responding.

Classes cost $25 per person

Pre-Registration Is Required as space is limited.
Workshops must have a minimum of 10 participants to be held.

March 17, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Post adoption Parenting workshop
A Window Into Your Heart: Strengthening your child's social and emotional development
Presented by Anne Fleury, MSW and Mari Itzkokwitz, MSW

Participants will learn social and emotional milestone development for children; way parents can enhance their child's development by strengthening attachments, demystifying temperament and encouraging natural talents and positive social interactions. The instructors will use real-life examples to augment the workshop.

Classes cost $25 per person

Pre-Registration Is Required as space is limited.
Workshops must have a minimum of 10 participants to be held.

April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (5 Tuesday sessions) Pre-Adoption Parenting Class: Classes focus on the unique needs of the recently adopted child from birth to age 4 years. Topics include:

Overview of ways the internationally adopted child differs from children born and raised in the United States

Medical issues that you may encounter
Attachment, family transition
Nutrition
Speech and language development
Gross and fine motor development
Behaviors and positive discipline
Safety
General baby and child care
Travel tips.

Classes cost: $125 per person or $145 for two people (shared materials)

Registration is limited to 40 people

A certificate to meet Hague requirements will be given at the end of the course to participants who have attened all sessions.

April 30, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Post Adoption Parenting workshop
Potty Training: A Stess-Free, 3 Day Program
Presented by Maria Zimmetti, Ph.D.

Participants will learn how to assess when their child is ready for potty training and gain practical advice on how to make toilet training a positive, bonding experience for both parent and child. Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn strategies to address their child's unique developmental needs.

Classes cost $25 per person

May 17, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Family Picnic-- Sixth International Adoption Center Family Picnic and 5th Silent Basket Auctioin: Burke Lake Park for families that have participated in our pre and post adoptive services. Registration is limited to 200 people and RSVP is required. this year the silent basket auction fundraiser will be going to the Clean Water Project in Honduras.

May 19, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Post Adoption Parenting workshop
Attachment: What is it and how it affects your family.
Presented by Susan Alvarado, LPC PLLC and Marianne Heilferty, LCSW

Participants will learn about ways to facilitate attachment to their children. Practical suggestions and techniques to avoid will be discussed. Participants will be given time to ask questions.

June 1- 15, 2008: Honduras Orphan Care Trip for International Adoption Center Personnel- The office will be closed so that the staff can participate in a medical relief effort in Honduras

Office will be closed October 11-14 2008 for the Annual American Academy of Pediatrics Meeting.

October 18, 2008 -- 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Fifth Annual International Adoption Center Halloween Open House. Bring your silliest or scariest costume for International Adoption Center "Spookfest". As always costumes for the children are required (and stongly encouraged for the parents). Located at the International Adoption Center 8505 Arlington Blvd. Suite 100, Fairfax, VA. (location subject to change based on response and room availability, check back or call our office before the event).
